Hierarchical network flow phase unwrapping

چکیده
The well-studied Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) problem for digital elevation map generation involves the derivation of topography from radar phase. The topography is a function of the full phase, whereas the measured phase is known modulo , necessitating the process of recovering full phase values via phase unwrapping. This mathematical process becomes difficult through the presence of noise and phase discontinuities. This paper is motivated by recent research which models phase unwrapping as a network flow minimization problem. A major limitation is that often a substantial computational effort is required to find solutions. Commonly these phase images are huge ( 10 million pixels) and obviously the sheer size of the problem itself makes phase unwrapping challenging. This paper addresses the development of a computationally efficient hierarchical algorithm, based on a “divide-and-conquer” approach. We have shown that the phase unwrapping problem can first be partitioned into independent phase unwrapping subproblems, which can further be recombined to produce the unwrapped phase. Interestingly, the recombination step itself can be interpreted as an unwrapping problem, for which a modified network flow solution applies! In short, this paper develops a parallelization of the network-flow algorithm, allowing images of virtually unlimited size to be unwrapped and leading to dramatic decreases in the algorithm execution time.

InSAR Phase Unwrapping by Transforming Sparce Data into a Regular Space
Phase unwrapping is one of the most important parts of InSAR techniques. In order to estimate the grand surface displacements, interferomtric phases modulated between 0 to 2π must be unwrapped. Based on the use of either the conventional method or persistent scatterer (PS), phases will be spread both regularly and irregularly. The phases of PSs can be unwrapped by reducing phases into a regular...

متن کاملOn phase unwrapping based on minimum cost flow networks
Phase unwrapping is a key step in the SAR interferometric processing chain as it converts the phase information derived from an interferometric image pair into valuable height information. Many algorithms have been developed to solve the phase unwrapping problem. None of the algorithms implemented so far has met with all the requirements for an optimal solution. Recently, a very promising appro...
متن کاملProcessing Strategies for Phase Unwrapping for Insar Applications
One of the most challenging aspects in the successful application of SAR interferometry (INSAR) is unwrapping the interferometric phase. The difficulties arise in attempting to find global optimization procedures with the best possible cost criteria for data that are both noisy and incomplete. Recent progress in this problem includes introduction of network flow optimization, and the use of tri...

Figure 1: An example SAR-image. It pictures the Teide volcano on the island of Tenerife. Lava flows are pictured in green, brown while vegetation appears in purple, green and yellow [5]. SAR (synthetic aperture radar) is a radar system used to create very high resolution images of landscapes. The SAR image is created by recording the echo of pulses of radio waves that are sent towards the objec...
